3 Procedures for Your 50s
By the time we reach our 50s, we may be starting to show very visible signs of aging. This is the time many men and women seek out plastic surgery to reverse the effects of time and produce a more youthful appearance overall. At Madnani Facial Plastics, we have a number of requests from 50-somethings for the following procedures. These surgeries offer dramatic, long-lasting results for the right patients.
The eyes are often one of the first areas to show signs of age, with fine lines in the outer corners and puffiness and bags underneath. Even the upper lids can begin to show wear and tear, with drooping and sagging that can interfere with makeup and even obstruct your line of vision. Eyelid surgery is an excellent way to address these concerns while giving you a refreshed appearance.
Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids or both lids at the same time. The procedure removes excess skin and tissue from the eyelids, opening up the eyes and eliminating the drooping and puffiness that commonly occur with age. Incisions are generally placed inside the lids or in the natural creases of the eyes where visible scarring after surgery will be minimal. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and most patients are able to return to regular activities within a week or two after surgery.
A facelift treats signs of aging in the mid and lower face, including sagging skin and even deep facial creases. The procedure involves repositioning of underlying muscles and tissue before firming up the skin, to produce a natural appearance. Facelifts can take up to 10 years off your looks and are frequently recommended around this age when injectable treatments are no longer as effective.
Dr. Madnani performs most facelifts on an outpatient basis, without general anesthesia.
Incisions are placed in the hairline or in the natural creases around the ear, where noticeable
scarring will be minimal. The surgery usually requires about 7-10 days of downtime before most patients are comfortable going out in public without significant swelling or bruising from the procedure.
Some patients actually request a neck lift before they even consider a facelift, since the neck often shows the signs of aging first. Loose skin can lead to the formation of jowls along the jawline, while skin and tissue underneath the chin can produce the dreaded turkey wattle. A neck lift addresses all of these issues, as well as horizontal banding that occurs around the neck as a result of skin laxity and loss of collagen.
Like the other surgical procedures described here, neck lifts are usually performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Incisions are placed under the chin or behind the ears to hide post-operative scarring. When a neck lift is performed alone, the recovery time is generally 7-10 days. However, it is not unusual to perform a neck lift in conjunction with a facelift, which keeps most patients out of the public eye for up to two weeks.
