Is a Neck Lift Right for Me?

With many options in cosmetic surgery today, it can be difficult to know which procedure will serve your needs best. For example, many individuals tend to focus on signs of aging on the face, when the neck is often the first to belie your years. Is a neck lift the right choice?

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that tightens excess muscle and removes skin to provide a more youthful contour to the neck. It can be used for necks with a significant amount of loose, sagging skin or deep horizontal creases. It might also be recommended in instances of hanging jowls, loss of jawline definition or the appearance of a double chin or “turkey wattle.”

A neck lift might also be recommended in cases where the patient has lost a significant amount of weight over a relatively short period of time. This most commonly occurs after a patient has undergone bariatric surgery. In this situation, a neck lift may be combined with other lift procedure to remove loose skin from various areas of the body to produce a sleeker body contour.

A neck lift is performed on an outpatient basis. I perform this procedure without general anesthesia however it can also be performed in a facility under general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes a recovery period of 1-2 weeks before patients are able to return to work and other activities. Incisions are typically placed under the chin and behind the ear or along the hairline which optimizes camouflage of the incisions after surgery.

Neck Lift or Face Lift?

Some patients may question if a neck lift or face lift will give them the results they are looking for. If most of the loose skin and wrinkling is around the jaw and neck area, a neck lift may be sufficient. This is particularly true if the appearance of the neck looks much older than the face. If concerns primarily revolve around the mid-face and jawline, a face lift may be the better solution.

In some cases, a combination of a neck lift and face lift may be recommended to achieve the best possible results. This way you can get more work completed with a single dose of anesthesia and just one recovery period. It can also be more cost effective to have more than one procedure in a single session. The recovery time for this combination procedure is the same.

A neck lift can be a good option for patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their neck and jawline. To learn more about this procedure, contact Dr. Dilip Madnani at 212-203-8591.
