Cosmetic ear surgery, also known as otoplasty or ear pinning, is a procedure designed to provide balance and symmetry to the face. Large, protruding ears can be the source of teasing and bullying for children, which can impact their self-esteem and confidence at an early age. That is why ear pinning is one of the few plastic surgery procedures recommended for patients as young as five or six, once the ears have fully developed. It can also be performed on teens and even adults that are unhappy with the appearance of their ears.
Who is it For?
Dr. Madnani may recommend ear pinning under the following circumstances:
- Ears that protrude from the sides of the head
- Ears that are unusually large
- Asymmetrical ears (different sizes, shapes or position)
Ear pinning is generally performed as a single procedure. However, some adult patients considering otoplasty may decide to combine the procedure with other facial procedures.
How does it Work?
Depending on the age and needs of the patient, Dr. Madnani may perform ear pinning under local or general anesthesia. Incisions are commonly placed behind the ear, but may also be located inside the ear, depending on the specific surgical technique used. Tissue and cartilage are contoured from behind the ear to ensure the ear heals in a flatter position.
Sutures are used to close the incisions and a special dressing is placed to hold the ears in position during the healing process.. The entire procedure often takes about one hour to complete.
What are Results Like?
Patients are allowed to return home the same day as the procedure. Oral medication may be taken to manage any post-operative discomfort. Dressings are applied to the ears for a number of days while the initial healing process takes place and patients are not allowed to put any pressure directly on the ears during this time.
Results of ear pinning are visible right away, although the patient may not see the results until the dressings are removed. This procedure is considered a permanent alteration of ear shape and position, and only needs to be performed once for results that last a lifetime.
Ear pinning can have a significant impact on a person’s self-esteem, even at a young age. If you or your child is unhappy with the appearance of your ears, contact Dr. Madnani’s office at 212-203-8591 to learn more about the ear pinning procedure.
